Great Britain is wet. The frequent downpours that we’re subjected to, especially in the north, have become part of our national identity. Does any culture talk about the weather as often and as pessimistically as we do?
But we’re a hardy nation, and we’ve adapted to it. From the well trained grounds-people at Wimbledon Tennis Championships who are always ready to roll out the protective covers when rain stops play, to the huge variety of waterproof coats available on the racks at your local clothes retailers, we’ve come up with any number of ways to keep things safe from the rain.
Concrete driveways are no different. As with any external property in the UK, they’re going to get wet at some point. But extended exposure to water, even everyday precipitation, can damage concrete which hasn’t been properly prepared to deal with it.
Sealant is the answer. By applying a film of sealant over the surface of your concrete driveway, you can safeguard against rain water (and the chemical compounds it contains) being absorbed into your concrete, and the adverse effects that this can have. The sealant will plug the tiny porous holes that are present in any concrete surface, forming a barrier that will ensure the structural longevity of your driveway, and also help to arrest any loss in the vibrancy of coloured concretes.
Concrete will usually be sealed by your contractor as part of the (very important) final “finishing” stage of installation. Sealant needs to be reapplied regularly, and although opinion on the frequency with which this should take place varies, it should be done at least once every two years for maximum effect. With a properly sealed driveway you’ll be able to rest assured that, the next time the heavens open, your drive will be safe and sound.
